About Million Hearts DE
Million Hearts® Delaware
Million Hearts® Delaware is a public-private effort to advance the goal of the national initiative to prevent 1 million heart attacks and strokes by 2017. Million Hearts® Delaware aligns the efforts of hospitals, government, major employers, and health care providers to combat cardiovascular disease with three specific aims: public awareness, provider engagement, and blood pressure screening.
Heart disease and stroke combined are the leading cause of death in Delaware. Excess weight, hypertension, and smoking contribute to thousands of heart attacks and strokes in Delaware each year. Million Hearts Delaware is committed to saving lives through aligning the efforts and resources of its partners.
Through its public awareness initiative, Million Hearts® Delaware is working hard to improve blood pressure control and waist circumference, easily measured risk factors for reducing heart attacks and strokes. Not only is the goal to identify risk, but also to connect individuals with health care providers. For year two of our initiative, we also are focusing on tobacco cessation, the single most important behavior for cardiovascular disease risk reduction. Our efforts are aimed at increasing taxes and negative advertising – the most effective evidence-based methods for stopping use of tobacco products.
For the clinical prevention arm of the initiative, Million Hearts® Delaware aims to improve care for people who do need treatment by encouraging a targeted focus on the “ABCS“—Aspirin for people at risk, Blood pressure control, Cholesterol management and Smoking cessation—which address the major risk factors for cardiovascular disease and can help to prevent heart attacks and strokes.
